Is there a better anti-war movie? Is there a better movie? The fact that Paths of Glory is not usually mentioned among Kubrick’s best, is baffling.
Some people may not realize that Kirk Douglas was once young with a handsome face. There was a time when award show audiences watch him with charmed reverence, not discomfort. He had many great roles, but I’d put his Col. Dax up there with the best film performances by any actor.
Think of other great war movies. Great as they are, they're epic in length and crammed with enough pyrotechnics to trigger epileptic seizures.
Paths In Glory says as much as any of them. And Kubrick needed only 84 minutes to say it.
